Posted - 13 Jun 2008 : 12:15:06 Hi - I'm desperate to find someone to design a small island in Shetland for me, to enhance the addon scenery already available for the isles. Out Skerries (4nm Northwest of Whalsay) is just a blur with a small hill on it. In reality, it is a vibrant little community of 70, with fishing trawlers, salmon farms, and a 380M hump-backed runway which at one time was the shortest commercially-used runway in the UK (I was at school there when the bloke from the Guinness Book of Records was there to confirm it). The approaches are extremely testing, and are regularly done by BN-2B islanders from Tingwall (EGET) carrying up to 8 passengers.
I grew up on Skerries and am an avid fan of Flight Sim (especially X), and would contribute in any way to the development of a simple representation of my island if someone could just model the landscape, scenery and the runway. I'm able to provide pictures, maps, textures, information etc.
I'd even consider paying for it if it weren't too extorionate!!
Please help - it would be an awesome addition to the FSX scenery for Scotland and Shetland.
I'm currently the FISO and Senior Fireman at Tingwall EGET but am moving home to Skerries next week with my wife and kids. My email address may be changing so please contact the 'boss' on julie.powis 'at' btinternet.com to get in touch.

Posted - 17 Jun 2008 : 13:39:40 Hi Ryan
Regarding your problems is it possible that you have either FSX SP2 patch or FSX Acceleration installed and are using the original version of Scotflight for FSX. This senario will cause the sort of problems you are having. The latest version of Scotflight is fully compatible with SP2/Acceleration so if you have your original download instructions then you can redownload the latest version from the Visual Flight site for free. Hope this helps.

Posted - 17 Jun 2008 : 11:46:39 Hi again, I emailed you this morning regarding a half-hearted attempt to get to Papa Stour and Foula. Unfortunately the cloudbase was around 300' or less so Papa was aborted, and the Foula flight was full so I'm still grounded... I'm leaving for Skerries tomorrow, but will return quite frequently as there is still several trailer loads of 'the boss's' clothes and shoes to decant from our house, and I may thumb a lift out to the West side and get a few more fields photographed for you.
I dont think I have any other scenery mods north of Fair Isle, but I do have MyTraffic X installed, which I've seen causing problems for others on occasion. The strange thing is, the problems didnt occur immediately and some of the other mainland airfields are affected, though most are perfectly okay.
For anyone else thats interested, I've posted the pics I took during my skive the other day of Whalsay, Tingwall and Skerries to my rapidshare account.

Most are relatively blurry for a 6mp camera, but anyone who's ever flown low-level in an Islander will understand :O
So this is my last day as a lazy FISO and SAFO @ Tingwall, wish me luck as I will now have to work for a living as a salmon farmer...

Posted - 15 Jun 2008 : 12:57:57 Hi Ryan
I have mailed re info on your local airfields.
With regard to your crashes do you have other scenery activated for the area north of Fair Isle?

Posted - 14 Jun 2008 : 22:48:06 Yes and very good work with those I must say. If I can be of any assistance at all regarding the finer details of the facilities for any of the new strips or updating the existing ones, please get in touch - I can get flights to any of these isles to pick up any info u might want.
I cant actually achieve much in Shetland in FSX at the moment, as I assume i'm having sone kind of conflict software-wise and anywhere north of FairIsle causes a crash to desktop...

Posted - 14 Jun 2008 : 14:50:30 Hi Ryan
Sorry to disagree, but if my info is correct the airstrip is on Bruray and this island appears in the default FSX. It also appears [ without airstrip ] in the redrawn coastline featured in Scotflight Highlands & Islands as per this screenshot. It will also appear if you have the UTX-Europe product.

It is certainly my intention to add this feature to Scotflight along with the other small strips you mention. Can't say yet when this will happen. Detailed scenery for Sumburgh, Tingwall, Scatsta and Unst airfields are already available in ScotflightFSX.

Posted - 14 Jun 2008 : 10:04:07 I have a highly detailed A3-size map from a book a former schoolteacher wrote about the history of the place, which could be used. It does kinda exist in FSX about 4nm NE of Whalsay. (Did I say NW last time? :O ) But its just a nondescript land-mass with one small hill and the island the airstrip's on is missing completely. I know Fair Isle, Scatsta, Unst, Sumburgh and Whalsay are in FSX, but there are also strips on Papa Stour, Foula, Fetlar and Out Skerries which are not. It would be an excellent place to practise short-field GA aviation with short-hop flights.
There are hundreds, if not thousands of places with names based on the word 'Skerries' as I believe it just a scottish word for rocky islands.
So if any among you are enthusiastic scenery designers, I have a fantastic project for you!! |

Posted - 13 Jun 2008 : 23:29:00 Hi George -
It shows up better in http://local.live.com ,if you use the Road View.
Rod - those skerries (and ther's hunnerds o' them aboot there) are away to the West. The ones in the Faroes scenery are good navmarks for getting to St Kilda.
Had a look in fsnordic but nothing there either. There is a CFS2 scenery at simviation, but I don't know if that would be any use or not. It adds roads rivers lakes and airports, but doesn't mention mesh. Shetland is certainly an area worth doing properly.

Posted - 13 Jun 2008 : 21:46:58 Hi, Somebody did create scenery for the Faroe Islands a while back, which also had some small Scottish islands included. quote: The files contain data on the Faroe Islands plus three small Scottish islands, Sula Sgeir, North Rona and Sule Skerry. The three latter islands are also recreated by us
Presumably these are not the same as the islands you are requesting.
