Anyone experienced this? I have never had this before so I cannot understand why it has started now. I have got my new q6600 running at 3.ghz but thats not by doing anything fancy. All very puzzling, but my word when it does work, the scenery is superb, everything is far crisper and the illusion of depth (although its flat) is great

Anyone know what causes it to happen

Hi Paul -
I put DEP error into Google as a search and that found lots of matches.
It seems to be yet another of those really cute "security feature" tricks created by a bunch of underemployed programmers in Seattle, and it would not surprise me in the least to discover that it is activated when you disable UAC.
I don't have FSX or Vista, so I can't test anything for you, but I can offer my sympathy.

Cheers
MikeW

Hi,
Data Execution Prevention is a feature of all versions of windows including XP, certainly since SP2 and possibly earlier.
It is configurable so it should be possible to either turn it off (not recommended) or to restrict its operation to specific applications and processes.

Rod.

Easier said than done I'm afraid. For whatever reasons, although you can identify certain programs not to be caught in its net, FSX isn't one of them. So I either have to turn it off altogether or keep getting the error.

What is so frustrating is that I have had FSX running without ever getting this and its only since I upgraded my CPU to a Q6600 G0 and ultimately my BIOS that its started to happen, but frankly I can't see what that has to do with it

Disable UAC is one of the first operations I do after installing a fresh 64 BIT Vista O/S. Turning off Windows Aero, in favour of Windows Vista Basic, is the second but touch wood, I have never seen a DEP error yet.

I don't see what O/S you are using PK but with an obscure fault like the one you have at the moment, my first rather brutal suggestion would be to format all the drives and reinstall both O/S and FS.

If that's not an option then try running FS as a basic default sim with no addon scenery or addon aircraft and if that works you know it's nothing to do with your O/S. You can then start adding stuff 'till the fault shows again.

Yes, it is easy, select "ADD" and browse to FSX.EXE:

However, on both XP and Vista64, I have DEP turned on only for essential Windows progams and services.

I tried exactly what you describe George and a warning message appears saying I can't run fsx.exe without DEP.

Hmm, I haven't actually tried it Shep, I just attempted to show how to add an exception.

George

Edit. PK, perhaps the reason you are getting this message after upgrading is that the Q6600 has hardware DEP switched on?

Hi George

I've had a look in the BIOS and I can't see anything that would disable hardware BIOS. I am running this on 64bit Vista and an Asus P5W DH Deluxe mb. But then I have been for Months. This makes me think it is definately something to do with changing the CPU from my E6700 to the Quad Core and upgrading my BIOS so that it reads it correctly...bit of a pain really

Hi Paul,
Forget bios. DEP is controlled by the o/s not the bios.
The Intel Q6600 is does not support hardware DEP.
Set your System DEP to Windows only as in my screenshot. It could also be worth running a virus scan just in case your DEP Error message was triggered by some corrupt data attempting to run on your system.

This has got me stumped totally. The idea behind buying this chip was its ability to overclock, nothing serious but certainly up to about 3.2, which is well within its boundary. I have an Arctic 7 freezer pro fan on it and at 3.0 the cpu gets to no more than 40. Put it to 3.2 and I get the blooming DEP error within 3 minutes.

Hi Paul,
The Cpu temps you are quoting are with the CPU at idle. When overclocking you really should stress cpu and memory at 100% monitoring temperatures at the same time to ensure stability.
These links will get you on the right track;

Take your time with this. It is no use having a fast CPU if it makes the system unstable.

I too was getting this DEP error. I tried turning DEP off for FSX and got the same rsult as above, i.e. FSX will not run without DEP. I didn't get the error whilst actually running the program, but every time I closed it down.

However, I recently re-flashed a new bios for my Asus board, and since then I have not recieveed any DEP messages. Incidently, I havn't had any screen freezng or other graphics problems either.

Quite possibly, George. DEP error is triggered when you try to address reserved memory locations.

Well I have gone back to my original settings, CPU = 333x9 giving me a fairly basic overclock of 3.0ghz. Everything is stable again. I have noticed though, even with the quad core, although the textures load a lot better and are crisper, they have a tendency to blip in and out of focus, and I still get the judders something alarming if I set FPS to unlimited, so I tend to keep to 30. Around the outskirts of London, not great. I need to have a look at my FSX.cfg now and see what to do in there, so if anyone has suggestions
