A lot better than Google Earth as it uses the GetMapping aerial scenery - very useful find, thanks |

Keep your eye out for the Bird's Eye view available at some locations. It uses oblique imagery from Pictometry Inc and unlike normal 'random' oblique aerial imagery, is set out in a grid allowing you to look in four directions and to move viewpoint left, right, forward or back. The images I've seen (Boston, Mass for example) are quite spectacular. Not seen any in the UK - doubt there are any, but if anyone spots any, I'm sure they'll say.

Thanks for the link Ray. The displays here are pretty spectacular too. I confess to one slight disappointment in that I searched Coningsby in vain for any sign of the Battle of Britain Flight parked on the aprons. Many years ago I had the priviledge of visiting Coningsby where I spent the day clambering all over those vintage aircraft in the company of the Flight's engineer. Does anyone know if they are still based there?

Wow, that is quite a find.
Much nicer looking imagery when zoomed out than Google Earth/Maps as it uses one dataset rather than showing lots of mismatched tiles.
That appears to be the full 25cm resolution Getmapping data too.... Not aware of any other free source of that.
Is there a 3D version, ie more like Google Earth than Maps? |

Horses for courses I suppose. I prefer the consistency of staying with the same data set(s) as long as possible when zooming out rather than switching very quickly to a lower res data set as Live Local does. This also has the advantage (for me) of allowing you to see where the different/higher res data sets are.

Well not exactly a free source, in that it is only licenced for viewing via Google Earth, but I know what you mean. For me, it's always worth checking the different viewer to see the differences on each.

NASA WorldWind is an alternative 3D application:

Open source (now) too.

Portsmouth is very good too. Excellent views of the Victory and HMS Warrior. Many thanks to Shep for putting us onto this.

For those with Google Earth installed there are hundreds of fascinating aviation related views on this site ranging from a Lancaster in flight over Huntingdon to the thousands of aircraft stored at AMARC in the Arizona desert. One of my favourites is the SR-71 Blackbird on the deck of an aircraft carrier, quite a puzzle until you realise why it is there. Just follow the links that interest you and see what you think. http://www.googleearthhacks.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=6
