Those of you who have visited the UK VFR Libary download pages in the last day or so may have noticed a prototype for the new-look Visual Flight forums appearing.

Having ironed out most of the gremlins, I thought it best to warn you of the imminent change and at the same time seek your feedback before finalising things.
The main point to note is that the forums themselves are completely the same as before - same content, same members, same logon details for those of you who are members, so nothing has really changed apart from the overall look of the forum pages.
Hopefully this will mean a painless transition, but please let me know as soon as possible if you spot anything not working or if you have any concerns about the new look.
The new look forums are now fully functional and linked to the same underlying database as the old-look forums, so anything you post via the new look pages will simultaneously appear in the old look pages, i.e. your posts will not be lost. However, you will (for the moment at least) have to log on to the new look forums separately to the old look forums. Fortunately this is just a temporary inconvenience.
To try out the new look forums:
http://visualflight.info/forums
Please note that the 'vfforums3' part of the URL when you are using the new look forums is only temporary, so please don't bookmark this or link to it. Tne forum URLs will revert to the original 'forums' when the new look becomes permanent - possibly overnight tonight.
I look forward to any comments you may have.

Hi John, The changes are subtle but somehow it looks tidier and it does now carry a few extra bits of info, which is nice. I'm glad you didn't chnage the colour scheme apart from a few beige areas Tony |

Thanks for the feedback Tony. I've deliberately kept the changes to the bare minimum to integrate with the new look Visual Flight site itself - which I suppose I should have mentioned as it is the main reason for the change to the forums look and feel. I'm trying to get everything which is currently scattered around into one place and make everything more consistent and 'linked'.

Looks very neat John. I particularly like the menu column on the left hand side.

All fine, although for long posts, space now a little restricted, Like the tabs at the top and means I shall probably take a cruise around the rest of the site. Well done John. johnp |

Hi Johns.
I too think the new forum page space is a bit restricted in actual size available for good size impressive screen shots. This is due to a big chunk of the page taken away by the newly introduced side panels.
Could those side panels be replaced by clickable tabs at the top of an expanded full size forum page??
John[VFR] -I hope this will be taken as a constuctive proposition if it is not too difficult technically to achieve as I believe good screen shots big enough to achieve the positive impact aimed for, have been and hope to continue to be of a great and constuctive feed back on our exeptional and unique forum.
Regards and best wishes
Monir
Ps. I discovered since then that the bottom scrol bar can recover back most but not all the forum page space, to see the screen shots. However that facility I could not call upon when trying to write or read a topic in the forum page ??????Why |

Hi Monir
I think the problem with big screenshots even with the original forum width is that it becomes impossible to read any actual text posted in the same discussion because you have to keep scolling left and right to view it all.
Don't get me wrong, big screenshots are great, but I think the answer is to post medium sizes screenshots linked to the full size versions, so people can view the original just a click away.
I realise that this is not all that easy to do technically (or rather it is easy, but only if you know how to do it!), so I will be investigating the possibility of people posting screenshots directly onto the site, i.e. not via imageshack etc, and this will include automatic resizing/linking to the original/full sie images.
No promises on this, but I'll see what I can do.
