Some of the other 'sticky' posts here refer to saving as JPG or JPEG in order to cut the file size of the image. Here's a little more detail on how you can do this:

Even if you have no other image editing programs on your system, you can convert images using Windows' built-in Paint program which is available through Accessories in the Start menu. Load the image into Paint, then choose File, Save As... from the Pain menu bar. Change the "Save as type" to "JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpeg,*.jpg)", then save. With a typical Bitmap image, this will reduce the file size to a fifth or less of the original, though the actual saving depends on what's in the bitmap and how much it can be compressed by the JPEG format.

NB. JPG and JPEG are the same thing.
