Q: How do I add scenery to Scenery Library?

A. These are the instructions for adding scenery to Scenery Library. The starting point for this is that you have a set of scenery and texture files, e.g. from a freeware download or something you have created yourself, and need to add it to Scenery Library manually, e.g. because there is no installer. Some familiarity with handling files and folders in Windows Explorer or My Computer is assumed.

Note: If you are unzipping a scenery download from flightsim.com, avsim.com or simflight.com etc, you will normally be able to skip steps 1-4.

Instructions

1. Create a folder somewhere/anywhere named something like MyScenery or whatever.

2. Create a subfolder within the newly created folder named scenery, i.e. so that you end up with MyScenery\scenery folder.

3. Create another subfolder named texture, i.e. so that you end up with MyScenery\texture folder.

4. Copy or move the scenery files (*.BGL) into the scenery subfolder, textures (mostly *.BMP) into the texture subfolder.

5. Start Flight Simulator and go into Scenery Library

6. Click the "Add area" button, then browse to find your newly created MyScenery folder. Assuming you have got everything right, the OK button will be enabled at this point. If there's a problem (e.g. you've mis-spelt 'scenery'), it will remain greyed out.

7. If you've chosen a suitable name for your folder, the scenery area title can be left as it is, but you may want to edit it anyway before clicking OK.

8. Click OK again (in the main scenery library window) to reload the scenery and return to FS.

9. With FS2004, you will then need to exit FS2004 and re-start it.

Note: With FS2004 it is important that you DO exit and then re-start otherwise the FS scenery may be in an inconsistent state. More importantly, if you don't restart before installing another scenery addon, the installer for the addon may accidentally lose the Scenery Library entries that you've just made. (Visual Flight installers are intelligent enough to recognise and handle this scenario).
