208 Squadron in Kenya...

Some time ago I compiled a little booklet on this subject and I have now finished printing and distributing it to surviving squadron

members. I have just made a Powerpoint slide show of the booklet and here are nine of the 150 slides:-

The slideshow is mainly about people and places and many of the pictures have been shown on this site. However, for anyone who is

interested, I have uploaded the presentation (100 MBs) and it can be downloaded from here:-

http://www.petermcleland.com/powerpoint/208_Squadron_in_Kenya.pps

The download will take at least 5 minutes and you must have Microsoft's Powerpoint to view it...A free download of Powerpoint Viewer

can be obtained here:-

Thanks for looking

A couple of people have said it is too wide and losing some of the right hand side...Anyone here seeing that?

Looks fine to me Peter. Thanks for those shots of Aden. I was there from 1962 - 65 and was the FAC for 45 Commando during the Radfan Campaign.

Thanks Andrew, Rod and Tony

Andrew, you were there when 208 Squadron had moved up from Kenya then...You probably FACd some of them too. My Hunter FGA9 "Echo" XE609 was eventually moved to 8 Squadron and then was written off at Khormaksar after an engine fire on the ground

I even controlled your aircraft Peter when it was flown by Flt Lt Hounsell on Operation Cut

Extract from 8 Sqn Ops 1965

"Ten Operation Cut sorties (FAC controlled strikes in support of ground troops moving up the Dhala road) were flown on the 15th by Flt Lt Williams (XE649, XJ689), Fg Off Hulse (XF454, XF388), Flt Lt Hounsell (XE609), Flt Lt Sturt (XJ632), Wg Cdr Jennings (XF440), Lt Kerr, RN (XG237), Flt Lt Porteous (XG237) and Fg Off Flynn (XE552).

I don't think any other Sqn's were involved that day. 43 Sqn were having a quiet month as "A large part of the month’s flying effort was devoted to practice for a flypast on the 11th for the presentation of the standard to 78 Squadron." and 208 Sqn was back in Muharraq by then.

There are sme great shots in your presentation, Peter. The aerobatics look very good indeed.
It brought back some meories for my wife who was Aden with her father who was with the AAC in Little Aden 1963-65. The 'scruffy beach' could be the BP beach which was very popular

I added the music to the PowerPoint presentation...In case you wanted to re-download it...The size is now 103 mbs.

If you don't like the music you can always turn the volume to zero

Off topic...here is a short slide show of a series of photographs that I took recently from my bedroom window...There are no captions but they are in the order that I took them:-

I was just having one of my occasional looks at the forum and have been through your swallow photos. What an amazing sequence; you have caught some brilliant 'poses' by the birds They should be on a wild life photo forum. I expect the nest will soon be empty

Lovely shots Peter. Some of them would be worthy entries to the Countryfile Calendar competition.

I finally got this to work how it was supposed to:-

http://www.petermcleland.com/powerpoint/208_Squadron_in_Kenya.zip

Unzip the downloaded file to anywhere and it will create a folder called 208_Squadron_in_Kenya...Open the folder and doubleclick the file "208_Squadron_in_Kenya.pps".

The PowerPoint presentation should now play with music.

If you just let it run then it will go for about half an hour.

If you do not have Microsoft's PowerPoint then you can download a free PowerPoint Viewer here:-
